Louis Vuitton king of the handbag and purse, can now boast another huge name in its roster of celebrity associates: Kanye West. The famous rapper is bigger than big these days, and his announcement is certainly to add to Louis Vuitton’s pop culture cachet, not to mention their coffers. His plan is to release both a men’s and women’s line of shoes by the fall.

There’s no hint yet of what the shoes might look like. Everyone’s being fairly secretive about the Kanye Louis Vuitton design. With a Louis Vuitton handbag or even a Louis Vuitton purse, we would probably have a better idea of what to expect. But with West-designed shoes, who knows? All we can say is that they’re bound to be highly stylish. The rapper is well known for his fashion consciousness, and he even made the announcement last week in Paris, dressed entirely in clothes from his own line.

Louis Vuitton, aside from being a purse, sunglasses and handbag giant, is well known for enlisting stars from unlikely artistic spheres to help design and sell their product. Most famously, Takashi Murakami has been an LV collaborator for the past few years, and designed the now ubiquitous Louis Vuitton Multicolor Monogram ogo. Murakami even worked with Kanye on the cover of his album “Graduation.” My, what a tangled web they weave!

The handbag and the purse are what Louis Vuitton does best, but it seems that more and more they are adept at tapping into new markets and new talent pools using the hottest stars of the day. So stay tuned for Kanye’s shoe designs – we’re all waiting in anticipation for them.

Fashion in the years 1910-1919 is characterized by a rich and exotic opulence in the first half of the decade in contrast with the somber practicality of garments worn during the Great War. Men’s trousers were worn cuffed to ankle-length and creased. Skirts rose from floor length to well above the ankle, women began to bob their hair, and the stage was set for the radical new fashions associated with the Jazz Age of the 1920s. crazy hatsDuring the early years of the 1910s the fashionable silhouette became much more lithe, fluid and soft than in the 1900s. When the Ballets Russes performed Scheherazade in Paris in 1910, a craze for Orientalism ensued. The couturier Paul Poiret was one of the first designers to translate this vogue into the fashion world. Poiret’s clients were at once transformed into harem girls in flowing pantaloons, turbans, and vivid colors and geishas in exotic kimono. The Art Nouveau movement began to emerge at this time and its influence was evident in the designs of many couturiers of the time. Simple felt hats, turbans, and clouds of tulle replaced the styles of headgear popular in the 1900s. It is also notable that the first real fashion shows were organized during this period in time, by the first female couturier, Jeanne Paquin, who was also the first Parisian couturier to open foreign branches in London, Buenos Aires, and Madrid. Two of the most influential fashion designers of the time were Jacques Doucet and Mariano Fortuny. The French designer Jacques Doucet excelled in superimposing pastel colors and his elaborate gossamery dresses suggested the Impressionist shimmers of reflected light. His distinguished customers never lost a taste for his fluid lines and flimsy, diaphanous materials. While obeying imperatives that left little to the imagination of the couturier, Doucet was nonetheless a designer of immense taste and discrimination, a role many have tried since, but rarely with Doucet’s level of success. The Venice-based designer Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo was a curious figure, with very few parallels in any age. For his dress designs he conceived a special pleating process and new dyeing techniques. He patented his process in Paris on 4 November 1909. He gave the name Delphos to his long clinging sheath dresses that undulated with color. The name Delphos came from the bronze statue of the Delphic Charioteer. Each garment was made of a single piece of the finest silk, its unique color acquired by repeated immersions in dyes whose shades were suggestive of moonlight or of the watery reflections of the Venetian lagoon. Breton straw, Mexican cochineal, and indigo from the Far East were among the ingredients that Fortuny used. Among his many devotees were Eleanora Duse, Isadora Duncan, Cleo de Merode, the Marchesa Casati, Emilienne d’Alencon, and Liane de Pougy. The extravagances of the Parisian couturiers came in a variety of shapes, but the most popular silhouette throughout the decade was the tunic over a long underskirt. Early in the period, waistlines were high (just below the bust), echoing the Empire or Dir?ctoire styles of the early 19th century. Full, hip length “lampshade” tunics were worn over narrow, draped skirts. By 1914, skirts were widest at the hips and very narrow at the ankle. These hobble skirts made long strides impossible. Waistlines were loose and softly defined. They gradually dropped to near the natural waist by mid-decade, where they were to remain through the war years. Tunics became longer and underskirts fuller and shorter. By 1916 women were wearing a calf-length dress over an ankle-length underskirt. When the Paris fashion houses reopened after the war, styles for 1919 showed a lowered and even more undefined waist. The Tailleur or tailored suit of matching jacket and skirt was worn in the city and for travel. Jackets followed the lines of tunics, with raised, lightly defined waists. Fashionable women of means wore striking hats and fur stole or scarves with their tailleurs, and carried huge matching muffs. Most coats were cocoon or kimono shaped, wide through the shoulders and narrower at the hem. Fur coats were popular. Changes in dress during World War I were dictated more by necessity than fashion. As more and more women were forced to work, they demanded clothes that were better suited to their new activities; these derived from the shirtwaists and tailored suits. Social events were postponed in favor of more pressing engagements and the need to mourn the increasing numbers of dead, visits to the wounded, and the general gravity of the time meant that darker colors and simpler cuts became the norm.[1] A new monochrome look emerged that was unfamiliar to young women in comfortable circumstances. Women dropped the cumbersome underskirts from their tunic-and-skirt ensembles, simplifying dress and shortening skirts in one step. [2]By 1915, the Gazette due Bon Ton was showing full skirts with hemlines above the ankle. These were called the “war crinoline” by the fashion press, who promoted the style as “patriotic” and “practical”. Furthermore people were dressing less extravagantly due to funds being put toward the war effort. According to Elieen Collard, Coco Chanel took notice of this and created the new innovation of costume jewelry. She replaced expensive necklaces with glass or crystal beads. “Without grading them to size, she mixed pearls with other beads to fashion original jewelry to be worn with her designs” that were inspired by women joining the workforce. Shoes had high, slightly curved heels. Shorter skirts put an emphasis on stockings, and gaiters were worn with streetwear in winter. “Tango shoes” inspired by the dance craze had criss-crossing straps at the ankles that peeked out from draped and wrapped evening skirts. During the war years, working women wore sensible laced shoes with round toes and lower wedge heels. Large hats with wide brims and broad hats with face-shadowing brims were the height of fashion in the early years of the decade, gradually shrinking to smaller hats with flat brims. Bobbed or short hair was introduced to Paris fashion in 1909 and spread to avant garde circles in England during the war[6]. Dancer, silent film actress and fashion trendsetter Irene Castle helped spread the fashion for short hairstyles in America. The sack coat or lounge coat continued to replace the frock coat for most informal and semi-formal occasions. Three-piece suits consisting of a sack coat with matching waistcoat (U.S. vest) and trousers were worn, as were matching coat and waistcoat with contrasting trousers, or matching coat and trousers with contrasting waistcoat. Trousers were ankle length with turn-ups or cuffs, and were creased front and back using a trouser press. The gap between the shorter trousers and the shoes was filled with short gaiters or spats. Waistcoats fastened lower on the chest, and were collarless. The blazer, a navy blue or brightly-colored or striped flannel coat cut like a sack coat with patch pockets and brass buttons, was worn for sports, sailing, and other casual activities. The Norfolk jacket remained fashionable for shooting and rugged outdoor pursuits. It was made of sturdy tweed or similar fabric and featured paired box pleats over the chest and back, with a fabric belt. Worn with matching breeches or (U.S. knickerbockers), it became the Norfolk suit, suitable for bicycling or golf with knee-length stockings and low shoes, or for hunting with sturdy boots or shoes with leather gaiters. The cutaway morning coat was still worn for formal day occasions in Europe and major cities elsewhere, with striped trousers. The most formal evening dress remained a dark tail coat and trousers with a dark or light waistcoat. Evening wear was worn with a white bow tie and a shirt with a winged collar. The less formal dinner jacket or tuxedo, which featured a shawl collar with silk or satin facings, now generally had a single button. Dinner jackets, worn with a white shirt and a dark tie, were gaining acceptance outside of the home. Knee-length topcoats and calf-length overcoats were worn in winter. Fur coats were worn in the coldest climates. Formal dress shirt collars were turned over or pressed into “wings”. Collars were overall very tall and stiffened, with rounded corners. The usual necktie was a narrow four-in-hand. Ascot ties were worn with formal day dress and white bow ties with evening dress. Silk top hats remained a requirement for upper class formal wear; soft felt Homburgs or stiff bowler hats were worn with lounge or sack suits. Flat straw boaters were acceptable for a wider range of activities than previously, and Panama hats were worn for travel.

Easy Wall Color, Let Your Fashion be Your Guide

You’re dreaming about the beautiful room makeovers you’ve seen on TV. The one’s where a talented designer comes in and transforms the room into a stunning show piece complete with painted walls and well placed accessories. Remembering the wonderful tears of joy shed by the happy home owners, you go strait the paint store and look at all the color samples.

Then you become totally overwhelmed. You recall an episode of ‘Trading Spaces’ were the neighbors painted each others rooms in some sickening color and the friendship was destroyed forever. Suddenly images of horrified tearful homeowners come flooding in. They would do anything to get their boring white walls back! You’re not a designer. You panic. You back away from the paint swatches and decide instead to go shoe shopping for that adorable little dress you bought last week.

You feel better already. Thinking of your new dress brings a smile to your face. You recall how good it felt when you tried it on in the dressing room. It’s so cute. And you love the color! You can hardly wait for an excuse to wear it. Now for the perfect shoes to finish the look…

Hold on there fashion girl. What if you could capture that same happy feeling you have about your new dress and apply it to your room? What if you could be that excited about your house? You can! I’m here to tell you that if you can put an outfit together, you can put a room together. You know more about color than you give yourself credit for.

You don’t have any trouble choosing just the right shoes to go with an outfit. You easily mix and match tops and bottoms to create great new looks. You barely even think about it when you grab a box of hair color knowing that it will perfectly offset your eyes and skin tone. A peak in your makeup bag shows all the luscious shades of eye shadows and lip sticks that you have happily experimented with. Not to mention your undeniably great taste in jewelry. You’re no stranger to color or style!

So let’s start with what you know. Go to your closet and pull out 4 or 5 of your very favorite outfits. Lay them all out; complete with shoes, hand bag, accessories…everything. Now step back and take a look at what you’ve done. Notice the easy mix of color, texture and bling. Why do you like these outfits so much? What kind of colors are you drawn to? Are they warm or cool colors?

Notice the purpose of each outfit, be it work, play or evening wear. Rooms are like that. What is the purpose of your room? Do you want to create a sultry (evening gown) master bed room, a hard wearing (blue jeans) easy care family room or a fun playroom (sundress)? Ask yourself a few key questions. Are you going to use your existing furniture or get new? Either way, what are the dominant fabric colors of the furniture (bottoms)? Are the wood tones dark or light (leather shoes and belts)? What color are your curtains and throw pillows (tops)? Is there any brushed metal or sparkly glass in the room (jewelry)? Do you have wall to wall carpet (sweater or pea coat), hard wood (sleek leather jacket), or linoleum (rain coat) floors?

Try putting an outfit together using the dominate colors that you intend to have in your room. Don’t forget to match the outfit to the occasion. Is it a formal affair or backyard BBQ? What kind of fabrics, textures and colors are you using?

Walls are simply a back drop for everything else that goes in your space. Just like the foundation makeup you put on before you apply eye shadow. Now go back to the paint store and get those free color swatches. Grab every color from dark to light that you are even remotely interested in. Take them home and compare them to the ‘room’ outfit you have created. Think of them like foundation makeup or skin tones, just a back drop to your favorite outfit. Now you’re in familiar territory!

Hold them up to your ‘room’ outfit and you can confidently tell if it fits well or not. Would you wear it? Could you imagine it on a super model? Could you build an outfit around it? Do you get excited? Does it make you happy? You’re on the right track. You know what goes together and what doesn’t. Choose your color with confidence. Paint your walls. Put your look together, invite your friends over and show it off. It’s the perfect excuse to wear that new dress!

A Long Legacy of Fashion: The History of Hermes

The Hermes (pronounced air mess) name has a long history of excellence and worldwide success. Well known for their designer handbags, Hermes entered the fashion world as a saddler in 1837. Originally running a harness workshop on the Grands Boulevards quarter of Paris, Thiery Hermes created a legacy that would extend many generations and nearly two centuries.

Very soon after its inception, the Hermes house was already making a name for itself. In 1855, Hermes earned accolades at the Paris Exposition for first in class, and later won the First Class Medal of the 1867 Exposition Universelle. So fine were the Hermes harnesses and dressings, that coronations were often put off for the completion of these accoutrements.
Around 1880, Charles-Emile Hermes took over the business and moved the shop to a location near Palais de I’Elysee at 24 Rue Faubourg Saint-Honore. It was during this time that Hermes launched the business into retail sales, and bringing up his own sons in the business, the Hermes Company became purveyors to the most elite clients in Europe, North Africa, Russia, Asia, and the Americas. The first nod to the Hermes handbag came in the form of a “haut a courroies” bag, which allowed riders to carry their saddles with them.

By 1914, Charles Emile had retired, handing over the reins of the company to his sons, who renamed it Hermes Freres. They employed 80 craftsmen during this time, and also obtained exclusive rights to use the zipper in their leather goods and clothing. Throughout the 20s, Emile-Maurice remained as the sole head of the business. He had an eye toward the ever-changing future, and added an accessories line at this time. While nurturing his own sons into the family business, Hermes added a line of leather garments, the first being a zippered leather golfing jacket that was designed for the Prince of Wales. The Hermes handbag was introduced in 1922 – at the insistence of a demanding wife. Emile-Maurice’s wife complained of not having a suitable one, so her husband designed one for her. Hermes previewed his women’s couture line in Paris in 1929, following the release of the Hermes purse.

During the 1930s, Hermes produced some of his most recognized goods. The leather Sac a depeches (later renamed the Kelly bag) was introduced in 1935, and in 1937 the Hermes carre (scarves) debuted. The 30s also celebrated Hermes’ 100th anniversary, and witnessed the entrance in the U.S. market by way of the Neiman Marcus department store in New York.

After his death in 1951, Emile-Maurice Hermes was succeeded by Robert Dumas-Hermes, his relative by marriage. Dumas-Hermes introduced the carriage and horse logo and well-known orange Hermes boxes. He was first and foremost a businessman with a mind toward marketing, and in 1956 when the new princess of Monaco was spotted carrying the Sac a depeches Hermes handbag, he promptly renamed it the Kelly Bag. The shot of Princess Grace appeared in Life magazine, and by the late 1950s, the Hermes logo reached renowned status.

The company changed hands again in 1970, when Jean Louis Dumas-Hermes took over from his father. He later launched an advertising campaign that took the discreet Hermes name from “old people’s nostalgia” to the subject of a young person’s dreams. He strengthened the marketing for the fashion house and strove for excellence. By this time, women were sporting the Kelly bag and the Constance clutch, their heads and necks adorned with Hermes’ trademark brightly colored scarves. Bold Hermes jewelry and sensuous cashmeres only added to the sense of class and luxury.

Some of the most recognized women in the world carry designer Hermes handbags. Among these are Nicole Kidman, Paris Hilton, Madonna, and the Duchess of Windsor. Below are descriptions of the company’s most popular Hermes purses:

• The Kelly Bag: Typically made from crocodile, alligator, ostrich-skin, or other plain leathers, it sports a metal-tipped clasp that can be fastened with a tiny padlock. The key is often hidden in the leather and dangles close by from the handle.

• The Constance shoulder bag: This Hermes purse is a simple design, and varies only slightly from the Constance clutch. The shoulder bag offers a double strap, and both have the large H clasp.

• The Trim shoulder bag: A favorite of Jacqueline Bouvie Onasis, this Hermes handbag is an elegant favorite. It boasts a simple, single strap with a belted buckle, and a dainty chain clasp.

• The Birkin: Named after Jane Birkin, this Chanel bag offers sturdy double straps, a simplistic clasp, and comes in the traditional “envelope” style.
